Checking In on Your Brand

September is the new January, and it’s a great time of the year to check in on how your brand is serving your business.

Turns out Tay Tay was right…August seemed to slip by like a bottle of wine. Isn’t she always though? Isn’t she always?

For as long as I can remember in my Mom/Entrepreneurial life, I have experienced strong January vibes when September rolls around…the kids are back to school, all the wine has slipped by, routines are back in place, and it feels like a great time to get life back together. I spent a lot of time Mommin’ this summer, and it was a gift. Truly. I was able to spend a lot of quality time with my growing-up-way-too-fast kids doing all the things we love…playing at the pool, hanging at the beach, staying up late to watch movies. It was great, but I made a conscious choice to take a little step back from work to do so. I realize this is a major luxury, but at the same time, I found myself feeling a tad bit unfulfilled (due to taking a small step away from my professional life). I have always been a hard worker, so to voluntarily spend our days with a more easy breezy lifestyle felt odd to me…it was a good half of the summer before I had settled into my more relaxed routine.

One thing I was able to effectively do for Golden during this time was practice what I preach to the business owners who become clients of mine. The arm’s length between me and my work allowed me to use a wider lense view of my own brand. I gave myself and the brand I have built a good ol’ once over to evaluate how things are going with the business. What has been working? What has not been working? Am I really rock solid with my mission and what I set out to do with Golden? Am I really deeply rooted in my brand foundation, brand voice, and messaging? Is everything in line to best connect with the other business owners I hope to work with?

Turns out, I was able to get a really great sense of how I would like to best move forward into the last portion of the year. It’s amazing what a little space can do.

My intuition told me that if I was feeling this way about my own brand (a little hazy in some spots) that other entrepreneurs might be experiencing the same things. Maybe you have uncertainty about your brand and the message you are delivering. Maybe you are not delivering any message at all. Whatever it might be, there is always room for checking-in with your brand to best ensure you are strong, set-up, and effectively connected.

And, as I say, September is the new January, so it’s the perfect time to check in with your brand. Here is a check list I created that will allow you to quickly and effectively evaluate how you stand with your OVERALL brand…remember, your brand is SO MUCH more than your logo. Your (hopefully) beautifully and well-intended logo design is only a piece of the brand puzzle. This check list will highlight all the pieces that I see as your brand and give you simple prompts on evaluating each area.

So go ahead and take a look, and chip away at checking in with your brand (wine or no wine). And remember that investing in your brand is always worth it. If you find yourself unsure on these questions surrounding your overall brand, it could mean that it is time to call in some help. After all, as a business owner, you are likely wearing a million hats. Hiring an extension to your marketing efforts could not only release you of many of your to do’s but can significantly boost your revenue once all the right people know and love exactly what you have to offer.
